Outlets & Switches

This is the job that fills a Tuesday afternoon: a dead outlet in a rental, a switch that's felt loose for a year, a GFCI in the bathroom that trips every time someone plugs in a hair dryer. A licensed electrician in Austin, Texas handles every one of these calls, whether it's an occupied apartment or a house, and apartment electrician near me searches route here as often as they route to a house call. Nothing about the process changes between the two.

Every device gets tested with a plug-in tester and, on GFCI and AFCI circuits, a trip test before we call the job done. If a wall is plaster instead of drywall, we say so up front, because plaster cuts slower and can chip in ways drywall doesn't, and that changes how long the visit runs.

Priced per device after the walkthrough, and the price per unit drops once we're past the third device on one visit. Decora switches go in for $0 extra when we're already opening the box for something else; otherwise it's its own line item.

Outlet types we actually install

Four outlet types cover almost every call we get, and picking the wrong one is the single most common mistake we find in a house that's had do-it-yourself work done before us.

  • Standard 15A outlets for general living space, matched to 14-gauge wire on a 15-amp breaker. We check the breaker before we touch the outlet, because the outlet is rarely the actual problem.
  • GFCI outlets for anywhere within six feet of a water source. A GFCI that won't reset twice in one week means the outlet is wired backwards or the circuit is wet somewhere behind the wall. We find which, rather than swapping the outlet a second time and hoping.
  • USB-C combo outlets that put charging ports next to the standard receptacle instead of on a plug-in adapter that blocks the second slot.
  • 20A outlets for a dedicated circuit, always on 12-gauge wire. Twelve-gauge wire on a 15-amp breaker is legal. Fifteen-gauge on a 20 is not, and we've found it three times this year, always from a prior owner's own wiring.

Switch types, and why the wiring matters more than the plate

A single-pole switch controls one fixture from one location and is the simplest device in the house. A three-way pairs two switches to control the same fixture from two locations, and the traveler wire between them is where most miswiring happens if a previous job used the wrong terminal. Dimmers need to be matched to what they're dimming, which is the subject of its own long section on the lighting and fixtures page, because an LED driver that isn't dimmer-compatible will flicker or hum no matter how good the switch is.

Decora paddle switches aren't a wiring difference, just a plate and toggle style. We install them for $0 extra labor when we're already inside the box for another reason. If a decora swap is the only reason we're on site, it's priced as its own device, same as any other switch.

Old-work box swaps

An old-work box, also called a retrofit box or a remodel box, is designed to clamp against the back of drywall or plaster rather than nail to a stud, because the stud is already covered. Cutting the opening is the part that takes practice: too small and the box won't seat, too large and the wall plate won't cover the gap. We cut to the box's own template, vacuum the opening before the device goes in, and never leave drywall dust inside a live junction.

New-work boxes, by contrast, get nailed straight to a stud before drywall goes up, which is why a ceiling fan box has to be a new-work or fan-rated retrofit box specifically rated for the added weight and vibration. Old work box for a switch, new work box for a fan. If your ceiling can't hold a fan-rated box, we say so before we hang anything, and that decision lives on the ceiling fan and smart device page.

Pigtail vs. backstab wiring

Backstabbing pushes a wire into a spring-loaded hole on the back of an outlet or switch. It's fast, it's legal on most devices, and it's also the single biggest cause of the warm, buzzing switch plate we get called out for. The spring contact loosens with heat cycling over years, and a loose contact arcs.

Pigtailing joins the circuit wires together with a wire nut and runs a short separate wire, the pigtail, to the device's screw terminal. It takes longer at install and it's the only method we use, on every outlet and switch, no exceptions. The device is now a branch off the circuit instead of an inline link in it, so a failed device doesn't take down everything downstream, and the screw terminal holds tighter under heat than a spring clip does.

The tolerance difference shows up years later, not on install day, which is exactly why it gets skipped by anyone pricing the job by the hour instead of by the device.
